Barcelona 'have to free up £171m if Messi signs new deal

The Spanish giants will have to cut £171m from their wage bill if Lionel Messi agree to sign a new contract with the club.

The Argentina International attempted to force an exit past season, but president Joan Laporta is more and more assured that new clause can be agreed before next campaign.

However, RAC1 reported that Messi renewing his contract would pressure Barcelona to free up £171m in wages, which could result to the Spanish giants offload several fringe players.

Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti, Miralem Pjanic and Junior Firpo are among those confront doubtful futures in Catalonia, while the two French international Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele have also been strongly linked with exits in past weeks.

six-time Ballon d'Or winner ended the 2020-21 campaign netted 38 times and registered 14 assists from 47 outings
