Ofaakor District Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly dumping her four-day-old baby into an abandoned manhole in Dansam, Awutu Ofaakor suburb in East Awutu Senya Municipality.

According to several local residents, the woman living in an unfinished building at Dansam was pregnant but was not seen around the area after giving birth.

Neighbors suspected something was wrong when a foul smell swept the area and a search found a lifeless baby in an abandoned water-filled pit.

The incident was reported to the police and the young mother was taken into custody pending investigation.

A police station source told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the woman was arrested in the early hours of December 9.

The suspect is currently assisting police with further investigations.
